James, was from Salthill, Co Galway, although his mother is believed to be from Kerry.

The young athlete’s talented local GAA club, Salthill Knocknacarra, paid tribute to James after his sudden passing.

An online death notice states that James is the “beloved son of Máire and Matthew” and that his beloved parents, his brother Daniel and his sister Aoife, grandparents, relatives and friends “will sadly miss him.”

A local in the area said: “This is an absolute tragedy. It is incredible that a child loses his life in such a terribly sad way. We all think of family. “

Brendán Fitzgerald, a local Kerry County Council member, added: “Everyone in the area is completely shocked by this sad accident.

“This is a popular and very scenic hike, and for a child to die under such dire circumstances on what was a happy family outing is just horrible to think about.

“We are all talking about Covid and confinements, but at least that will happen, but for this family the sadness and pain will last forever.

“All our condolences and prayers go out to the mother and father during this terribly difficult time for them.”
