Tributes have been paid following the death of a homeless man sleeping rough on the campus of University College Dublin.
Michael Byrne, believed to be in his 70s and known fondly by UCD students as ‘Old Belfield’, passed away yesterday after he was found unconscious.
His remains were taken to the Dublin City Morgue for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
In a statement on social media, UCD said: “Michael Byrne, affectionately known as the ‘Old Belfield’ by students and staff, sadly passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021.
“A fiercely reserved person, we thank those of you who quietly cared for Michael.
“We will miss him on campus.
Dr. Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain, RTE star and UCD speaker, said: “I am very sorry to hear about Michael’s death.
“He was a very charming and calm man and the UCD community will miss him. As a student who lived on campus for 4 years, he was a familiar and friendly face.
“It is comforting to know that so many cared for him with respect.”
ALSO KNOWN AS ‘DREAMER’
Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan also paid their respected on social media.
The Dublin Bay North MP wrote: “It is sad to hear the passing of Michael Byrne. As long as he kept to himself, he was a part of the UCD community for a long time. “
Meanwhile, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Green Party Councilor Oisin O’Connor tweeted: “A reminder for everyone not to judge people by their appearance. RIP Michael Byrne “.
Michael had been a well-known personality in the area and had not been the hallmark of Humans of Dublin and the College Tribune over the years.
The College Tribune published a tribute to him, saying: “It is with great regret that the College Tribune reports the death of Michael Byrne, a homeless man who has become a fixture on UCD’s Belfield campus known affectionately by students. from as ‘Old Man Belfield’ and as the ‘Dreamer’ in his local area. “
Last week it emerged that three people who had previously made use of homeless services in Dublin City died during the Christmas period.
Two of the deceased had been sleeping outside in tents in Phoenix Park and had occurred separately.
According to Inner City Helping Homeless, 59 people in homeless services died during 2020 in the capital alone.
