Irish League football will return to Limerick for the 2021 season when Treaty United received a license to compete in the 10-team SSE Airtricity League First Division.
The club will take its place in the second division, and the reserve team of Shamrock Rovers, who played in the division last season after the withdrawal of Limerick FC, will leave.
Treaty United lined up a team in the National Women’s League last season. They will be led by former Limerick boss Tommy Barrett.
“The licenses for the 2021 season were granted by the Independent Licensing Committee on Friday,” the FAI said in a statement.
“After receiving the NLEC recommendation today that the First Division be made up of 10 teams, the FAI Board made its decision this afternoon.”
The First Division season will start on March 26, one week after the start of the new First Division campaign.
