The tragic circumstances that led to the death of teenage hero Josh Dunne are becoming clearer tonight.

It is understood that a fight broke out after a bicycle was stolen in the East Wall around 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

Shortly after the alleged theft of the bicycle, delivery cyclists became embroiled in a dispute with a man in his twenties on the East Wall.

Several teenagers from downtown who were in the East Wall area got involved in the fight around 9:20.

Josh is believed to have tried to break up the fight between the men and was stabbed along with another young man, also 16 years old.

The two teens were rushed to nearby Mater Hospital, where Josh was sadly pronounced dead that same night.

The other youth suffered a stab wound to the chest, but is believed to be in stable condition tonight.

Later in the evening, a man allegedly in his 20s who was also involved in the dispute filed at the Mater with serious injuries.

Josh was a popular young man from Ballymun who was a promising footballer.

He was an Academy player for the North Dublin professional club Bohemian FC, which today released a moving tribute to the talented young man.

A GoFundMe created to help the family of the teenage hero pay for his funeral has already raised more than 20,000 euros.

Gardai has asked for witnesses and asked for anyone with a video of the incident to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí on Store Street Garda Station continues to investigate all circumstances of a fatal assault and associated incidents that occurred on East Wall Road, at the junction with East Road, East Wall, Dublin 3, January 26, 2021.
