The horrible accident happened around 1.30pm in cold but sunny weather conditions.

Horrified family members alerted the emergency services and the family watched helplessly as they were unable to carry out any type of rescue service due to dangerous conditions.

Emergency services responded quickly to calls for help from the family and the Coast Guard, RNLI and local Cliff Rescue quickly entered the scene along with West Kerry Gardai.

The Valentia Coast Guard commissioned the Shannon 115 Rescue Helicopter, the Valentia Lifeboat and the Dingle Coast Guard to assist the scene.

They managed to recover the body around 3 in the afternoon. Access to the place where the boy had fallen proved challenging due to lack of access and difficult terrain.

TRAGIC ACCIDENT

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Dingle, before being transferred to Kerry University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow.

Gardai is treating the death as a tragic accident and will prepare a file for the local coroner.

A local in the area said: “This is an absolute tragedy. It is incredible that a child loses his life in such a terribly sad way. We all think of family. “

Brendán Fitzgerald, a local Kerry County Council member, added: “Everyone in the area is completely shocked by this sad accident.

“This is a popular and very scenic hike, and for a child to die under such dire circumstances on what was a happy family outing is just horrible to think about.

“We are all talking about Covid and confinements, but at least that will happen, but for this family the sadness and pain will last forever.

“All our condolences and prayers go out to the mother and father during this terribly difficult time for them.”

The identity of the 17-year-old will only be confirmed when all the relatives have been informed of the tragedy.
