Matt Doherty is heading to Tottenham after the club agreed to a £ 15 million fee with the Wolves for his capture.
Dubliner’s standout performances in the Wolves jersey in recent seasons no doubt alerted Spurs manager José Mourinho to his availability, with Doherty now set to take Serge Aurier’s place in the Londoners’ defense.
Doherty made 50 appearances for the Wolves last season and has enhanced his reputation as a reliable defender and a significant threat going forward with seven goals to his name.
He played for the club in Sky Bet League One when the Wolves descended to third tier in 2013 and has been a key part of their rise to the Europa League with Nuno Espirito Santo.
The 28-year-old started his career at Bohemians and the Gypsies could now be in line to pocket £ 1.5 million from this deal.
Former Ireland manager Mick McCarthy brought Doherty to Molineux a decade ago after impressing in a preseason game for the Gypsies against the Wolves.
The Premier League team paid just € 40,000 for a player they hadn’t lined up in a competitive senior match for the Dalymount Park team, and that starting figure is believed to have doubled due to add-ons in the intervening years.
However, Bohs could now be poised for a more lucrative payout, with the club insuring 10% of any subsequent transfers.
Wolves boss Nuno is aiming to reshape the team, which finished seventh in the Premier League for the second consecutive season last season.
The club remains in talks with Arsenal about Ainsley Maitland-Niles as Nuno looks for versatile players, especially with winger Jonny out long term with a serious knee injury.
