The Tipperary defense of the All-Ireland SHC lives on after they fought hard to contain Cork at the LIT Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Saturday night.
Only a late surge, fueled by Jake Morris’s goal in the 68th minute, pushed Liam Sheedy’s team away from their neighbors, who had produced a good comeback to come from five points down in the second half.
Overall, Tipp was the best team, although a tally of 18 in the entire game as a whole could have been costly.
They will have to improve if they want to keep their crown, but they will look forward to the quarter-final draw with some optimism, especially the fact that younger players like Michael Breen and substitute Willie Connors drove them in on a day when some of the bigger stars. experienced did not reach the heights.
Much of the first half was played in monsoon-like conditions, with the wind blowing Tipperary, but they struggled to take advantage of that advantage as they threw 12 pitches in the opening period.
Jason Forde’s four free-kicks, allied to a good spot from midfielder Michael Breen, had them 0-4 to 0-1 up front in the 14th minute, with Declan Dalton having the only response from Cork, albeit just before the water break. Patrick Horgan free of 65 cut the deficit to one goal.
When play resumed, three bad passes from Tipp brought his count to eight in the 20th minute and were penalized when Horgan picked up a loose hand pass from Breen in midfield and was able to charge towards goal before sending a low shot. who edged out Brian Hogan to level the game.
The Rebels had the upper hand when Jack O’Connor’s hard work forced a free kick which Horgan converted and Breen’s draw was answered by a well-worked Cork effort finished by Tim O’Mahony.
However, Tipp finished the half strong as Forde scored his first point, his first on play, before Dan McCormack sent a good shot to put them in front and a free Forde left him 0-9 at 1-4.
The rain subsided at halftime, but the wind remained strong, with Cork’s Shane Kingston closing the gap at the restart. However, the overworking was costly for them, as Tipp benefited from the outspokenness of backup Willie Connors, who scored a point and set up another for Breen, his third.
That gave Tipp a three-point lead and while a point from Séamus Harnedy and Free Horgan rallied to one, the Irish champions appeared to have landed a decisive blow when Jake Morris delivered a delivery to Jason Forde, who held back Colm Spillane. before. ending the network.
When Séamus Callanan got what turned out to be his only score from the back, Connors again the provider, Tipp was 1-12 to 1-7 ahead, but he dug deep to do it again.
Harnedy was outstanding in this period and, just after the water break, he scored his fourth point to leave a point on him, Tipp 1-13 to 1-12 up front.
Breen had his fourth, Connors provided the job once more, but Cork had the momentum and a free kick and a 65 from Horgan brought another from Harnedy as they led for the first time since the first half.
The lead returned to Tipp when Dan McCormack and backup Paul Flynn had points, but Horgan tied with five minutes to go.
McCormack set up Breen to put Tipp up front and, after Cork’s substitute Darragh Fitzgibbon was opened with an equalizing effort, Tipp made them pay. Inevitably, Connors was instrumental in that, as his excellent play gave Morris a chance and he shot home for a four-point lead, reinforced by a second point from Paul Flynn.
While Cork had a response from Bill Cooper in injury time, a full-blown comeback was past them and Tipp moved on.
