Former GAA president Liam O’Neill has said the 2020 championship should not go ahead in light of changing circumstances.
In an interview on Tús Áite on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta tonight, O’Neill asked that the games be shelved for health and safety reasons.
“Since the beginning of the year, I’ve said we have to be careful, be safe. I’m saying now that inter-county games shouldn’t go ahead. It’s time to end it now. The numbers are increasing every day,” said O’Neill, who He served as President of GAA from 2012 to 2015.
“If we think it is the right thing to do, then we should do it, regardless of the consequences.”
“If we stop it, no one will put themselves in danger as a result, if we don’t, they could be. There is only one decision, stop it immediately. I think it’s that simple. There are things more important than matches. Nothing is more important than the game. life of the people “.
“As someone who has an interest in GAA, as someone who is deeply involved in my own club in my community, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.”
The GAA is expected to await the outcome of the cabinet subcommittee meeting tomorrow before making a call for the remainder of the season.
For now, this weekend’s Allianz Football League resumption, All-Ireland U-20 football semi-finals and hurling league finals and playoffs continue.
