Three online sushi takeout services operating from the bedroom of a suburban home in Santry, north of Co Dublin, have been reported by HSE, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) reported.
Health inspectors found that the unregistered sushi operation produced raw fish with cooked rice, without any hygiene or temperature controls.
It was sold as takeout food at three separate stores advertised online.
FSAI Executive Director Dr. Pamela Byrne said the operation was “totally unacceptable and poses a very serious risk to the health of consumers.”
Sushi is a very high-risk product because it contains raw fish that must be kept cold to reduce the growth of dangerous bacteria, the FSAI said.
He said that cooked rice, which is a ready-to-eat product, should also be kept cold. But the dormitory-based operation is marketed online under three different names, with no food safety management system or “cold chain” monitoring and “no evidence of traceability of raw materials” found by health inspectors.
The inspectors also found violations of food safety controls and record keeping, as well as food production, processing and distribution in an unsatisfactory and impure environment.
The three closed online takeout services were listed as:
* Koi Sushi (take away), 1 Shanvarna Road, Santry, Dublin 9
* Nagoya Sushi (take out), 1 Shanvarna Road, Santry, Dublin 9
* Kyoto Sushi (take out), 1 Shanvarna Road, Santry, Dublin 9
The closure orders were notified to Johnathan Barbosa regarding the Koi Sushi takeout; Bruno Barbosa regarding Nagoya Sushi and Paulo Ricardo Barbosa of Kyoto Sushi, all in the same suburban house at 1 Shanvarna Road, Santry, Dublin 9.
Overall, HSE environmental health officials issued five lockdown orders during the month, citing a variety of problems from observing a live rodent running down a back wall; evidence of extensive rodent activity in food preparation and storage areas; rodent droppings and gnawed food, all of which posed “a serious risk of contamination,” the authority said.
In addition to the three take-out sushi services, the FSAI also reported that HSE had issued closure orders in:
* TFS Wholesale, Unit 6 and 7 Colomane, Bantry, Co Cork
* Speedos (Restaurant / Cafe), 8 Tuckey Street, Cork City
Health inspectors said the facilities occupied by The Funky Skunk (Cork) Limited in units 6 and 7 of Collomane, Bantry, Co Cork and trade names such as TFS Wholesale showed “the presence of a live rodent plus evidence of excrement. and extensive rodent activity “which” posed a serious and immediate danger to public health “
Regarding the Speedos restaurant in Cork City, health inspectors said there was evidence of recent rodent and excrement activity posing a risk to food contamination and human health.
Dr. Byrne said she was particularly concerned about “unregistered and unsupervised online food companies selling a variety of sushi products from the bedroom of a home.” He said that running a food business that has not been registered and therefore is not supervised, “is totally unacceptable and represents a very serious risk to the health of consumers.”
