The baby was born at the Princess of Wales Hospital.

An investigation heard that the baby’s mother tested positive for coronavirus just before giving birth.

The main cause of death for the baby was severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, which means that the brain does not have blood or oxygen.

But “Maternal Covid-19” was listed as a secondary cause of death for the baby.

The boy was born with a low heart rate and was transferred to Singleton Hospital in Swansea.

Coroner Graeme Hughes heard that Coolio, whose family lives in nearby Maesteg, died on May 5 when he was three days old.

Coroner Lauren Howitt said at the hearing that “the mother was found to be Covid-19 positive shortly after delivery.”

What is HIE?

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is a condition that means there is a lack of oxygen and / or blood flow reaching the baby from the placenta.

It can affect all of the baby’s organs, particularly the brain.

Lack of oxygen can cause mild or severe brain injury and can be life threatening.

The investigation opened in Pontypridd, but was postponed to await the full results of a post-mortem examination of the cause of his death.

Coroner Hughes said, “I convey my condolences to the family in these sadder and more depressing circumstances.”

A full hearing will be held later this year.

It comes after shock figures released yesterday suggested that the death toll from the virus could have exceeded 40,000 in the UK.

The insect ripped families apart, with mother Fozia Hanif tragically dying of coronavirus just days after giving birth.

MORTAL SPREAD

Salina Shaw, 37, was also killed by the virus seven days after giving birth to a girl.

New research has so far found that five pregnant women have died after being admitted to a coronavirus hospital in the UK.

Researchers from the University of Oxford say they were among 427 mothers to be admitted from March 1 to April 14.

Study leader Professor Marian Knight said the fate of the babies carried by the five women is unknown.

But their analysis suggests that expectant mothers have no higher risk of severe Covid-19 than any other woman.

They found that 4.9 out of every 1,000 pregnant Britons have been admitted with the virus, and one in ten needs intensive care.

CORONAVIRUSES IN PREGNANCY

There is no evidence that pregnant women are more likely to become seriously ill from the coronavirus.

But pregnant women have been included in the list of people at moderate risk (clinically vulnerable) as a precautionary measure.

This is because pregnant women can sometimes be more exposed to viruses like the flu.

It is not clear if this happens with the coronavirus.

But because it is a new virus, it is safer to include pregnant women in the moderate risk group.

You may pass the coronavirus to your baby before he is born.

But when this has happened, the babies have improved.

There is no evidence that the coronavirus causes a miscarriage or affects your baby’s development during pregnancy.

Experts emphasize that this is no worse than for other women.

Pregnant women of blacks and other ethnic minority groups were more likely to be admitted than white women.

Another study suggested that three newborns with coronaviruses may have contracted the disease from their mothers during pregnancy or childbirth.

Other research has suggested that pregnant women may have an increased risk of severe coronavirus the closer they get to their due date.

Scientists say that a woman’s chest cavity gets smaller during pregnancy due to pressure from the growing uterus.

The researchers emphasized that most pregnant women infected with the virus will experience it as a common cold, fever, and perhaps a sore throat or dry cough.
