The Government is extending restrictions to the rest of the country that have already been introduced for higher and tertiary education colleges in Dublin.
Over the next two weeks, all higher and higher education institutions will be asked to hand over most of their tuition remotely.
Under the enhanced safeguards, classroom teaching will be limited to hands-on classes, such as lab activity, where online teaching is not possible, and all other classes will be conducted online.
The measures are being introduced as colleges prepare to reopen to students next week. Institutes of technology and universities of higher education have already reopened.
Libraries at universities will remain open under the new measures, but with usage restrictions. The investigation will also continue.
It is also likely that, as in Dublin, any planned student social activities on campus will be canceled.
In announcing the new measures, Continuing and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris said: “The next two to three weeks represent a critical juncture. The higher education sector has put in place robust plans and protective measures.”
“However, at the request of the Department of Health, it was agreed to introduce enhanced protection measures throughout the country to ensure the continuation or safe start of the academic period.”
Earlier this week, the four universities in Dublin announced their plans to deliver education online.
