Higher Education Minister Simon Harris has confirmed that thousands of third-level students will receive refunds of up to € 250 in the coming weeks.
The payment is to compensate students, as tertiary education has largely been forced online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Irish Times, the total cost of issuing the refunds will be 50 million euros.
Speaking to the Oireachtas education committee today, Mr. Harris said that payment will be available to students who have paid € 3,000 tuition or received Susi scholarships.
For those who receive the grant, Harris said he expected them to receive the money before Christmas, while other students may have to receive payment in the form of a fee refund credit note.
Harris also highlighted her concerns regarding potential increases in dropout rates due to online learning.
“I am really concerned about the mental health and well-being of the students,” he said.
Mr. Harris encouraged third-tier institutions to prioritize activities on campus for freshmen and seniors when Covid-19 restrictions allow.
