The Co Mayo tavern keeper who opened Ireland’s first “covid-free pub” on Thursday with mandatory quick tests for all customers was arrested last night.

The Western People reports that Donal Byrne, the owner of Eileen’s Bar in the center of Aghamore village, was detained for failing to comply with Covid-19 regulations.

It is understood that Gardaí arrived at Mr. Byrne’s premises at 7.05pm before he was arrested more than an hour later at 8.18pm.

An Garda Síochána said it is not his policy to comment on named individuals, but confirmed that an inspection was carried out at a licensed establishment in May on Thursday.

Gardaí said that a man in his 30s was arrested for violations of the Health Law after a “failed engagement,” after agents alleged a series of violations of public health regulations to the owner of the facilities and requested that fulfill them.

The man was subsequently released from Garda custody and a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution.

Gardaí said that all other people present complied with public health regulations and the premises were subsequently closed.

Sources told Western People that there were multiple people at the scene at the time of the arrest, but they were not overcrowded and socially estranged.

The pub was reportedly using test kits purchased from Communicare Medical Supplies in Claremorris, which are manufactured by Moe Lab, a German medical company.

“It has passed all clinical trials carried out by the German military under strict EU manufacturing laws and is being used by global companies. He’s got his result in 15 minutes and he’s 99.9 percent accurate, ”Byrne said Thursday.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) said at the beginning of this that the only way out is with rapid tests and tests is what we are going to do. The WHO has bought more than 120 million of this equipment that I have bought, ”he said on Tommy Marren’s show on Midwest Radio.

Byrne said customers would be tested for Covid-19 in an outdoor area and would get their results within 15 minutes before they could enter the pub and drink. The pub did not serve food.

He said the pub will serve up to 20 people from the local area who adhere to social distancing.

The innkeeper has voiced his opinion that Covid-19 regulations have been destroying rural Ireland since the start of the pandemic.

Under current Covid-19 restrictions, pubs that don’t serve food can only offer delivery or take-out services.
