Gardaí has attacked the country’s largest heroin gang after seizing more than 4 million euros in cash.
The money was found dumped in bags at a “safe house” in North Kerry.
It is believed to be the largest amount of cash in Ireland and experienced officials said it illustrates the “size of the drug trade and the profits to be made”.
The operation was run by the Garda Office of Drugs and Organized Crime (DOCB), which has been targeting the team for years.
The gang, led by two brothers, is based in the Ballyfermot area of West Dublin.
It is one of the largest drug gangs in the country and has long dominated the heroin market.
He has international connections and last September, a Turkish national, considered a major global player, was arrested in Dublin during a deal with the gang.
The team has also been a major target of the Office of Criminal Assets, which has seized fleets of high-value automobiles, the proceeds of crime, that belong to them.
A man, 46, was arrested at Kerry’s home. He has no criminal record. Gardaí said that it is common for major gangs to use someone who is trusted, but who “keeps a clean nose” as their money man.
Sinn Féin Councilor for Ballyfermot-Drimnagh Daithí Doolan praised the Gardaí: “We need to hit drug traffickers hard and the best way to do that is to get hold of their cash.
“Drug trafficking, particularly in Dublin, is a massive industry and we need to invest more energy and resources to address both the causes and consequences of the drug crisis.
“The enormous amount of money that can be made from trade is the reason there is so much violence.”
