The White House coronavirus outbreak is much worse than what the public is told and Trump is “scared” by the spread, it was reported Sunday.
With reports that a high-ranking official may have contracted the virus, a memorandum has been sent directing officials to wear a mask or a mask to cover the interior of the building, and only visit the West Wing if they “absolutely need it.” .
According to the Washington Post, the memo said that staff should only remove the mask when they are at their own desk.
It is unclear whether President Trump and Vice President Pence will wear masks.
Correspondent April Ryan tweeted, “I am hearing with good authority that the #coronavirus is more rampant in the #WhiteHouse than is being told to the public.
“A very high-ranking individual may also have been impacted!”
Members of the president’s COVID-19 task force, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, are currently in quarantine after coming into contact with an infected White House aide.
CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield and FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn are also in quarantine.
The news comes as:
An isolated Trump is said to be “scared” that the virus has reached the White House after diagnosis by Mike Pence’s press secretary Katie Miller, The Guardian reports.
On Sunday, Kevin Hassett, Trump’s top economic adviser, admitted on Face the Nation, “It’s scary to go to work.”
“I think he would be a lot safer if he were sitting at home than he would go to the west wing,” Hassett said. “It is a crowded place. It is, you know, it is a little risky. But you have to do it because you have to serve your country.”
Trump has refused to cover his face despite his exposure to two positive White House workers, including Miller, who is married to Deputy Chief Stephen Miller, and a valet who served the President his meal without wear a mask.
The New York Times reported that Trump was “upset to learn that Ms. Miller tested positive and has become increasingly irritated with people who get too close to him.”
Similarly, Pence confirmed that he would not isolate himself after Miller fell ill because “he has tested negative every day and plans to be in the White House tomorrow,” the Times reports.
Fauci, Redfield and Hahn will testify at the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Work and Pensions on Tuesday and will be allowed to do so via video link, a unique exception to administration policies.
Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, Republican chair of this committee, will do the same with his 14-day quarantine after a staff member in his office also tested positive.
But the White House is not only dealing with an infection – there is also apparently an insect infestation, according to a reporter Brian Karem.
“Few reporters, but a big roach in the WH”, Kemp tweeted on Monday afternoon.
The news comes when Ivanka Trump’s assistant tested positive for the highly contagious coronavirus.
White House staff received a memo on Friday titled “Strong Precautions We Are Taking.”
Eleven secret service agents have also tested positive, while 23 have recovered, and 60 are currently in quarantine, according to reports.
On Monday, Trump tweeted that coronavirus numbers are “going down.”
Some 80,000 Americans have so far died from the pandemic.
