Almost 52,000 more people have received Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week after the country moved to Level 5 restrictions.

More than 295,000 people received the payment today, at a cost of 85 million euros to the state.

This figure includes 11,000 people who worked in the food and lodging sector.

Dublin had the highest number of people receiving the PUP with 99,157, followed by Cork with 28,962. Leitrim had the fewest number of people enrolled in the payment with 1,703.

A fourth PUP rate has been added for those who had been earning more than € 400 per week prior to signing up for payment, and eligible recipients, both new and existing, receive the increased payment automatically.

A statement from the Department of Social Protection added that 3,900 workers are currently receiving an Enhanced Sickness Benefit payment.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys said the latest figures reflect the economic impact of the decision to move to Level 5.

“My key message regarding PUP is to submit an application online so your payment can be processed as quickly as possible,” instructed Ms. Humphreys.

“Anyone who has been temporarily laid off should apply for the PUP online through www.mywelfare.ie – that’s the quickest and easiest way to claim and receive a payment,” he added.
