Gardai in Cork has stepped up the fight against the war on drugs, and their efforts have seen a 77 percent increase in findings.
In mid-June, 11 additional guards were deployed to the Leeside drug unit and the move has proven to be a great success, as their work has made a notable difference.
In just a 48-hour period alone, the team has been involved in five estimated seizures worth a total of € 17.8250, as well as cash and other items.
Some of these drugs were hidden in strange places and they have detailed the strange places in which they were found.
In one case at the Grand Parade, € 200 worth of cannabis was found in a small plastic egg on Thursday.
In another case, 2,500 euros worth of cocaine was found in an aerosol can at a home in Pope’s Quay.
The five reported incidents are:
- November 12 at 10 am at Grand Parade. € 200 worth of cannabis herb in sachets was seized. The bags were hidden inside a small plastic egg. No arrests have been made, but the Gardaí is following a defined line of investigation.
- November 12 at 8 pm in Blarney. House search under court order that resulted in the seizure of 1,200 euros of cannabis herb, 1,150 euros in cash, a mobile phone and a scale. Man, in his 20s, arrested.
- November 13 at 5 pm at Popes Quay. House search under court order that resulted in the seizure of 2,500 euros of cocaine hidden in a spray, 500 euros of cannabis herb, a scale and small plastic bags.
- November 13 at 8 pm in Bishopstown. Home search under court order that resulted in the seizure of € 12,000 of cocaine and € 1,600. Man in his 20s arrested. SR 239/20 press release refers.
- November 14 at 1.30 am at Bridewell Garda Station. Man taken to the police station for a drug search and found in possession of 12 bags of cocaine worth € 850.
All medications are subject to analysis.

Speaking today, Superintendent Michael Comyns said: “In the last 24 hours, our units have made five detections on suspicion of drug trafficking.
“Our additional Gardaí in Operation Tara, including our Downtown Police Unit, and the reduction in footfalls in general due to the pandemic, has led to a reduction in most crime. What we are also seeing is a significant increase in our detections for the sale and supply of drugs.
“Since the City Center Police Unit was created and our members were temporarily assigned to our drug units, we have noticed that there has been a drop in visible drug use and drug trafficking in the city center. , but we are still making major arrests.
“Our entire Gardaí continue to maintain Cork as a safe environment for residents, businesses and visitors. If you notice any drug use or suspected drug trafficking, please give us a call.”
