Since 1 December last, Ireland began a gradual transition to Level 3 at the national level, with a series of temporary measures in place for the Christmas period. Some of these measures will come into force tomorrow, December 18, 2020.
The exceptions for the Christmas period are designed to help people have a meaningful Christmas.
The Taoiseach said:
It will be a different Christmas, it has to be, but hopefully these temporary exceptions to the Level 3 restrictions will reflect the Government’s appreciation of the deep innate desire we have to be with our loved ones this time of year, this everyone’s year. the years.
The Taoiseach said the government is well aware of the change in trajectory in recent days. So while there is an opportunity to take advantage of a change in restrictions, each individual and each family has to plan, remembering the significant and increasingly worrying signs that the virus is on the rise again. He said:
I ask everyone to think, and rethink, about how they plan to spend the Christmas period, to prioritize those closest to you and otherwise, to keep their contacts and socializing as low as possible.
Although more interactions are allowed, the advice remains the same: keep contacts as low as possible and prioritize a small number of key activities. The main goal is to stay safe and keep Covid numbers low so that we can maintain the lowest possible level of restrictions in the New Year.
The Taoiseach highlighted his understanding that NPHET will recommend the reintroduction of restrictions before the New Year in response to the changes we are seeing in the transmission of the disease. These recommendations should be considered by the government at its cabinet meeting scheduled for next week.
However, he emphasized:
“There will be no change in our planned approach between now and Christmas.”
The Taoiseach thanked all frontline workers in all industries who are working to keep us safe, but especially those who work in healthcare settings. He said:
The way we behave now will have an impact on those who are working in our health services during the Christmas period. In our behavior, we will show them our solidarity and support, as they have supported us without reservation throughout 2020.
At gov.ie/safechristmas you will find guidance and tips on how to make your Christmas safe, and is supported by an extensive communication campaign. People are advised to plan their activities in advance, to limit their contacts during this period, to keep celebrations small, to be safer outdoors than indoors, and to ensure good ventilation if they are indoors with others. people.
