Horse Racing Ireland’s proposal for the government to resume racing before June 29 has been successful, and June 8 is the new restart date.
The races were scheduled to return in phase three of the government’s roadmap, which outlines the phased reopening of business and social activities, but HRI has been refining its submissions in an effort to move that date forward.
A decision was made at a cabinet meeting on Friday afternoon to return the races to phase two of that roadmap after HRI proposals were approved by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) on Thursday.
British races will resume on June 1 with an all-weather event in Newcastle
It is understood that, among its reviews, the governing body needed to explain in more detail to what extent closed-door racing could adhere to the various health measures involved in social distancing, contact tracing, and track guard numbers .
While nothing has yet been officially confirmed about the June 8 restart, several prominent politicians, including Fine Gael TD Peter Burke, were happy to make the news public.
Burke tweeted: “Horse racing will return behind closed doors with strict protocols from June 8. It was a much-needed certainty for the sector.”
The cabinet meeting is understood to be ongoing while Burke sent his tweet. HRI has yet to make an announcement, but is expected to do so on Friday afternoon.
‘Competing with horses offers no greater risk’
Burke elaborated on his tweet in a press release issued later in the afternoon, when he stated: “In rural Ireland, the industry makes a great contribution to the local economy and how horse racing was declared essential at the beginning of the crisis, the move towards Allowing Closed Door Racing will not make any material difference in relation to protecting the health of our citizens.
“Horses continue to be ridden, staff caring for those horses have been allowed to travel as far as possible to get to work and mares have been allowed to be transported across the country as long as the people in charge of animals adhere to them. ” agreed strict social distancing protocols. “
He added: “If such related activities are allowed and can be carried out safely, then competing with horses does not pose a greater risk. Similar formats for Irish horses have returned in the UK, Germany and France. Breeds.
“I know that HRI has been implementing extremely comprehensive protocols and the widespread distribution of cameras at racetracks means that it will not be difficult to ensure compliance and adherence to social distancing. These measures will save hundreds of rural jobs and ensure there is a balanced regional reopening of the economy “.
