A small but select group of six riders went to post for the Group One show, with Charlie Appleby’s Pinatubo as the 5/4 favorite to reach gold in a mile for the first time.
On the journey across the English Channel he joined a trio of Irish rivals in the 2,000-guinean Irish-trained hero Ger Lyons, Siskin, and last year’s one-two, Circus Maximus and Romanised, trained by Aidan O ‘Brien and Ken Condon respectively.
Both Pinatubo and Siskin weren’t keen to get into the starting positions and ended up with plenty to do from an early stage when Circus Maximus and Ryan Moore galloped out front, with a 6/1 chance that Persian King would be their closest tracker.
Circus Maximus faltered early on the home straight, leaving Persian King a long way from his rivals under Pierre-Charles Boudot, and that lead may well have been crucial.
Once asked by James Doyle to take care of his affairs, Pinatubo showed the rapid acceleration that was the hallmark of his brilliant youth campaign, but it was too late, with Persian King still with a clear lead on the line.
Circus Maximus conceded to finish third, with Siskin fourth, winner Victor Ludorum’s teammate fifth and Romanized in last place.
Fabre said: “I don’t think it was by strategy, the best horse of the day won.”
Considering future goals, Fabre added: “We have different options, one is Champion Stakes at Ascot and another is the Arc. I think it can go back in the distance and we will see closer in time in which direction we are going. “
