Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien says a new housing plan will be announced in 2021.
Speaking on the radio, the TD has said that delivering 50,000 public housing is the goal of its department, recognizing the magnitude of the current housing crisis.
“I commissioned an investigation from ESRI, which should be available shortly, which shows that we need to deliver 33,000 homes per year.
“This year, it will probably be 20,000, public and private. It shows the scale of the challenge to do that.
“We need to build the capacity. We need to be realistic about how much we can build in a given year.”
O’Brien confirmed that the initiative will be a combination of new construction and long-term leasing.
“Housing for all is what drives me, that’s our Bible in my opinion, that’s our to-do list.”
“We will move to a new housing plan in 2021, around our delivery of public housing.
“Our goal is 50,000 new homes, and the vast majority of them are being built.
“I have shifted the focus (of public housing) from ‘acquisition’ to ‘construction.’
The announcement comes after the housing crisis continued throughout 2020, including more than half of all applicants who were turned down for the Rebuilding Ireland first-time homebuyer loan, according to the department of living place.
