A Co Meath farmer has spoken of his surprise to discover that a rave took place on his land over the weekend, attended by more than 100 people.
Speaking on Today with Claire Byrne, announcer and farmer Darragh McCullough said he went up into the field early this morning to do the harvest, when he found the remnants of the party that had taken place the night before.
McCullough posted images on social media after his discovery. It comes after a rave in Dublin’s south-central city on Saturday night, just one night after new restrictions were introduced to tackle Covid-19 in the capital.
“Needless to say, it was completely unexpected. We were in the last round of our harvest, our cereal harvest, and we have a field that is right by the sea … We had left it until the end because we had to get the combine harvester. on the beach at low tide and of course the harvest must be ready and the conditions must be right. So many planets must align before we are ready to strike, “he said.
“So Monday morning was morning, and we landed in the field ready to go, with the combine and the tractors and trailers and everything else, only to be greeted by a couple hundred, I reckon, at least a hundred. , ravers.
“They were having so much fun, it was just the scum of the party. I should have seen the warning signs, because on my way to the beach that morning, I got up early because I wanted to make sure there are no cars parked at the entrance to the beach The harvester, which is four meters wide, is quite uncomfortable and requires a lot of space.
“When I was driving down the highway, I saw a group of stragglers at a random bus stop in the middle of nowhere. I was thinking, ‘where did those guys come from?’ and I was thinking that maybe they were working at the local nursing home.
“They looked a little worse from wear and tear, I didn’t think too much about that, and I drove to the beach parking lot, and there were already about four or five cars there. This was shortly after 7am, sunrise had literally broken, and I was thinking ‘Oh my God, there are some people on the ball here pretty early this morning coming to exercise’ or whatever, “he said.
“Again, I didn’t think about it, but of course it was all the stragglers and the people who attended this rave.”
McCullough said it looked like the party was ending when he arrived, but there were still about 100 people there. Even more likely had attended and left earlier, he said.
“When I literally landed and I have a video there of when I landed on the site … The music was off and the guys were already packing up the covers. These guys were set up right, they had trucks, they had covers, they had huge amps and speakers, this It wasn’t a mess. I suppose a part of the crowd had also dispersed. “
“I mean, I don’t know if it was crazy or brave or what, but the blood rose a bit. When you land in your field … Actually, when I got to the gate of the field there were a couple of guys at the gate. I thought okay, here are a couple of guys who had a good night.
“When I jumped out of my jeep to go up to them and tell them to get away, they turned and headed up the hill towards the ruins. There is a ruin in the middle of the field, ideally located for an all night party, I may add, overlooking the sea.
“When I got there my jaw hit the ground. I thought maybe there were four, five, six, seven guys who had a good night. But being greeted by vans, taxis … obviously I didn’t do a people count but there was at least a hundred people there when I got there.
“It could have gotten ugly, if there’s alcohol involved and all of a sudden I walked in and told everyone to go away … I was surprised that basically everyone said OK, sorry about that, and headed for the door,” he said.
“The party was in ruins, so they limited themselves to the ruins, they weren’t trampling the harvest. Okay, there was a strange beer can around the field, but that’s nothing new.
“Several of the partygoers were carrying black garbage bags, they came prepared with black garbage bags and they picked up all the garbage. I got talking to some of them because I wanted to make sure there weren’t any stragglers loitering, so I walked with them off site “.
He started a conversation with some of them and “it turned out that they were all Brazilian and most were students, some professionals, there were BMW Five Series there, so not all of them were tough students looking for a cheap night.” outside”.
McCullough did not call the gardaí and said he knows some people might think he should have done so due to Covid-19 regulations.
“That was the last thing on my mind at that particular moment, until one of the guys thought I was such a healthy farmer that he tried to give me a hug”, to which he was thinking “back there, I have my limits” .
“Social distancing wasn’t even in the equation, there were couples making out around the wall. It was a nice old-fashioned kneeling gesture in Irish terms,” he said.
