The 29-year-old Moldovan whose body was discovered on the side of a road in Meath in the early hours of Saturday morning was due to be married in the next few weeks.
Staff at a Meath takeout have expressed their shock and devastation over the death of their popular colleague whose remains were discovered near an electric scooter in Harmanstown on the N51 Navan to Slane Road at 2.50am.
The young man lived in a house near where he was found and had only moved to Ireland in the last three months.
He was scheduled to marry his fiancee, who lives in Moldova in the next few weeks.
Staff at Romayo’s take-out restaurant on Collon Road in Slane expressed their horror at the tragedy.
“He was a very popular young man and he was working here on Friday. He was only in the country for a few months, ”said a co-worker who did not want to be identified.
“We are all shocked and devastated that he is gone. Nobody knows what happened. “
Local businessman David Smyth, who owns the building where Romayo’s is located, visited the site on Saturday morning and said that everyone who knew him loved the deceased very much.
“He had only been in Ireland for a few months and was due to marry his fiancee, who is back in Moldova in about three weeks,” he said.
“I visited the place in the early morning of Saturday after the accident. The deceased had lights on his scooter and was wearing a helmet and high visibility jacket. “
He said that the man “was here for a short time, but he had already made many friends in the area and was well liked by everyone who came across him.”
“It was very popular with the Romayos staff and my heart goes out to them and their loved ones at this time.”
Fianna Fail’s local Cllr Wayne Harding said: “This is an absolute tragedy and I am especially sorry for the Romayos staff.
“He was a member of a hardworking staff team at a very popular and busy takeout.”
In a statement issued on Saturday morning, Gardaí said they had come to the scene around 2.50 am after reports of an unconscious man lying on the road.
The man riding an electric scooter from Slane was treated by ambulance services but was later pronounced dead, according to the statement.
The road was closed pending a technical examination and local detours were established.
“At this time, Gardaí is treating this incident as a possible traffic collision and has asked witnesses to contact them,” the statement said.
Anyone who has traveled the Navan-Slane road between 2-3 am and who may have dash cam footage should contact the incident room at Navan Garda station on 046 907 9930 or the confidential Garda line at 1800 666 111.
