A MAN who killed a student after breaking a red light at a crosswalk received a suspended sentence of two and a half years.
John O’Shea, 66, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Jordan Murphy, 19.
The incident occurred in Bonavalley, Athlone, Co Westmeath on September 11, 2018.
At a sentencing hearing in Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court yesterday, Judge Keenan Johnson said the crime was the result of “a catastrophic lapse of trial” with fatal consequences.
GENUINELY REMINDER
Judge Johnson said he also accepted that the garage’s owner, O’Shea, was genuinely sorry for his actions.
The judge said that the interests of justice would be served by suspending a two-and-a-half-year sentence on a number of conditions, including paying 10,000 euros to a charity nominated by Jordan’s family.
It also disqualified O’Shea, of Ballyduff, Ballinahown, Athlone, from driving for ten years.
The judge said that any sentence imposed by the court had to be proportionate and also an appropriate tribute to Murphy’s memory.
He added: “Unfortunately, no sentence imposed can repair the damage and evil.”
Jordan’s uncle, Keith Murphy, welcomed the finding that Jordan, a second-year business student at Athlone Institute of Technology, had obeyed all road safety rules at the time of the accident.
He cried as he described how his nephew was “the most outgoing and friendly guy you could ever meet.” He added: “As a family today we have closure.”
