Gay Byrne’s wife, Kathleen Watkins, left Ryan Tubridy speechless last night when she gifted him one of her husband’s Toy Show sweaters.
In her first television interview since the sad passing of the RTE legend last year, the author also spoke about Gay’s last days and how several months passed before she was able to see the recording of his funeral.
She said: “It was wonderful for us to have him home for days and there was a talk around the bed. We orient the bed towards the lighthouse he loved. I remember someone telling me a few days after Gay’s death: ‘Do you miss Gay?’ It was horrible to tell someone because you really don’t know that someone is really gone yet, you just don’t know.
“I remember a woman whose son died in the Omagh bombing, I remember her talking about him and saying: ‘He just left, he left’ and the word ‘he left’ stuck in my mind.
“That is what happens. You don’t realize that the person is gone yet. “
The 85-year-old former Irish broadcaster said she had been admitted to hospital several times since her husband’s death, but now feels “fine.”
He also made sure the late presenter will be a part of this year’s Late Late Toy Show, offering one of his prized jumpers to Ryan speechless to raise money for homeless charities.
Kathleen explained that she made the gift, having recently walked through Dublin’s city center, seeing first-hand the homeless problem.
She said: “I found homeless people everywhere, three and four people lying next to each other, huddled at the doors. It was really very distressing. “
