A bear with a toothache received chest compressions in an attempt to save his life.

Killian Mac Lochlainn went out of his way to help Aurnia after she suffered complications while having two teeth extracted, but sadly she died.

The owner of the Wild Ireland animal shelter in Co Donegal captured the hearts of the nation with his plan to bring back some of Ireland’s most fearsome creatures to his sanctuary at Burnfoot.

The facility on the Inishowen Peninsula, which opened last October, even had its own TV show on RTE recently, which was a huge hit with viewers.

Killian fought back tears as he recounted how he and a team of vets just couldn’t save Aurnia.

He said: “Our beautiful brown bear Aurnia, our golden lady, had two broken canine teeth and they had started to give her a lot of pain and a lot of trouble.

“We brought in a team of specialist veterinarians who had the skills and tools necessary to perform dental work on a bear.

“If you can imagine that their canines are very large and you need specialized equipment to work with those teeth.

“Any anesthetic is risky, but it is even more risky if you are working with a large wild animal like a bear.

“Unfortunately, during the procedure, Aurnia stopped breathing and I tried to do chest compressions and the team was trying to do chest compressions with her for 45 minutes, but unfortunately we couldn’t get her to start breathing again and her we lost. “

Aurnia had a pretty miserable start to life and was kept in a small cage behind bars in Lithuania.

However, she was rescued and brought to Ireland a year ago, where she was one of the star attractions of the Wild Ireland sanctuary.

Killian said he was glad Aurnia had a happy last year of her life roaming wild Ireland with lots of space, good care and lots of food.

He added: “She was here just over a year and had a pretty good life here and that’s the only thing that consoles us all here.

“We all loved her very much. The only consolation is that he had a good year here, probably the best year of his life here in Wild Ireland.

“I would like to remember her like this.”

Killian, who is also a skilled attorney, has spent the last six years planning and building Wild Ireland and turning what was once a rugged field into a great local attraction.

In addition to the brown bears, there are wolves, a golden eagle, a lynx, and snowy owls in the center.
