Temperatures soared on Saturday, reaching their highest level in the state so far this year, as 23.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Newport, Co Mayo, according to Met Éireann.

Many parts of the country saw low temperatures in the 20s, and large numbers of people traveled, many by bicycle, to parks and beaches to enjoy the sun.

However, there were more unstable conditions elsewhere, with Met Éireann issuing Munster’s thunderstorm warning as of Saturday afternoon.

Despite using social media to complain about the number of people in Dublin’s Phoenix Park and on some beaches, the Garda Press Office said it was unaware of any official complaints or that additional patrols of the Garda to control the restrictions of social distancing in force to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Claremorris in Co Mayo saw temperatures reach 22.1 degrees, as did Athenry, in Co Galway.

Mullingar in Co Westmeath, the city of Galway and Gurteen in Co Tipperary posted highs of 22 degrees.

“There were also fierce storms around Gurteen,” said Deirdre Lowe, a meteorologist at Met Éireann.

“There were many 22 and 23 throughout the country. For real . . . Parts of the west, midwest, and south got the best temperatures today and the best sunlight.

“Some central and southern parts did well, but there were more clouds over Ulster.”

Yellow state

Éireann state’s yellow thunder warning was followed until 10 p.m. Saturday with groups of slow storms in Munster. Met Éireann said local lightning and downpours could be expected in the region during the warning period, with the risk of flooding.

Overall, many areas across the country will be dry, calm, and warm for the rest of Saturday, with more periods of hazy sunshine. The highest temperatures will range between 19 and 24 degrees, the warmest in the south central region.

On Saturday night you will see outbreaks of rain in the northern areas before gradually spreading south. The lowest temperatures will range between 3 and 12 degrees.

Sunday will be a much cooler day, with strong northeast winds. New outbreaks of rain are forecast, but overall the day will be dry, with sunny periods extending from the north. The highest temperatures will be between 12 and 16 degrees.

Sunday night will be cold, dry and clear. There may be some frost in the places as temperatures drop between 1 and 4 degrees.
