The Department of Agriculture has issued a warning about the use of a hand sanitizer product for public health reasons.
On Thursday night, the Department said it had removed the Virapro Hand Sanitiser hand sanitizer product from the Biocidal Products Registry due to potential public health concerns.
Some of the products are said to contain methanol instead of the ethanol traditionally used in disinfectant products.
And the department warned that prolonged use of such a disinfectant can cause dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory system irritation and headaches.
A statement read: “The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Navy has removed the hand sanitizer product Virapro Hand Sanitiser (PCS 100409) from the Biocidal Products Registry due to potential public health concerns.
“Tests conducted by the Department show that some of the disinfectants for sale do not meet the regulations governing the content and effectiveness of such products.
Part of the product contains methanol instead of ethanol. Prolonged use of this disinfectant can cause dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory system irritation, and headaches.
“This product may not remain on the market or be available for use.
“The Department has instructed the company involved to initiate an immediate recall of all products.
“Members of the public are advised to stop using this disinfectant with immediate effect. A Department investigation into this matter is ongoing.”
