The Department of Education has said schools are still scheduled to reopen on January 11.

The schools were supposed to reopen after the Christmas break on Wednesday, January 6, but in a speech announcing new Covid-19 restrictions on December 30, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the reopening would be delayed until Monday, January 11. following.

The next day, Education Minister Norma Foley told RTÉ’s News at One that giving schools an extra two or three days of vacation “gives families and society the opportunity to ensure their contacts are kept to a minimum” before for the children to return to school.

In a statement this morning, the Department of Education reiterated that position, saying: “Both the Department and the Government have the full intention that schools will reopen on January 11.

“This extended break will allow all members of the school community to closely follow public health advice and minimize their contacts before the children return to school.

“Both public health and the department believe that schools continue to be safe places of learning for all members of the school communities.

“The department will continue to collaborate with stakeholders in education and public health.”

The Minister for Children announced on Friday that the resumption of the Early Childhood Care and Education Plan will also be delayed until January 11.
