The Government agreed to reconfirm Ireland’s commitment to organize matches as part of UEFA’s rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament, which will now take place in 2021.

The four matches due to be played in Dublin in June 2020 are now tentatively scheduled for June / July 2021.

UEFA has asked all government authorities and member football federations to confirm their commitment to organize the games before April 30, 2020. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, will now write to the UEFA to make this commitment.

Minister Shane Ross said: “While it can sometimes be difficult to see beyond the current public health emergency, we have to plan for the future and the happiest times.”

“We were all looking forward to hosting the Euros this summer and I am pleased that the Government has again committed to being next year, subject to public health advice.

“Since the start of this project, the goal of the Government, the FAI, Dublin City Council and other stakeholders has been to make Dublin the best of the 12 host cities; that goal remains.

“It will be a great opportunity to remind the world of how well we can deliver world-class sporting events and to drive our international profile in a positive way.”

A pre-event economic study on the impact of organizing the tournament in Dublin and Ireland estimated the economic impact of direct spending by foreign tourists in the range of € 106m-€ 128m with Exchequer income of € 26m.
