The Government has agreed to prohibit evictions for the next seven weeks starting this Saturday.

The proposed legislation was discussed this afternoon during an incorporeal Cabinet meeting.

The Minister of Housing, Darragh O’Brien, yesterday presented a memorandum to the Cabinet and today the legislation was approved.

The new ban on evictions is tied to the 5km travel restrictions.

This means that whenever the Government decides to implement 5km travel restrictions in the future, the freeze on evictions will automatically take effect.

It is understood that the ban will be in effect for the six week period in accordance with the level five restrictions.

Tenants will also have ten more days in which they cannot be evicted after the restrictions are lifted.

The proposals will be debated in the Dáil tomorrow, in the Seanad on Friday, and then go to President Michael D Higgins to be signed into law.

Exemptions to the legislation include antisocial behavior and whether a dwelling or home was being used for other reasons without the consent of the owner.

Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin said he welcomed any ban on evictions.

However, he said he had several problems with the bill and that he would table amendments in the Dáil.

He said: “While we will support the bill, we believe it is very weak and needs to be strengthened to provide tenants with greater protection at this very distressing time.”
