TV competitor Mark “The Beast” Labbett leaves his wife so that he can move on with her lover after their open marriage failed.
The star and Katie have confirmed their separation after being married for seven years, blaming their 27-year age gap and life in Covid-19 lockdown for their problems.

Mark, 55, said: “There was never any cheating on Katie’s part, but it has gotten to the point where I realize it is best for us to go our separate ways and remain friendly.”
Nurse Katie, 28, who has been dating senior design engineer Scott Bate, 30, for 18 months, added: “I just want everyone to know what is what and that we are all happy.”
In an exclusive interview, Mark and Katie, who have a three-year-old son, talk for the first time about their unusual arrangement.
Mark said: “When Katie first confessed to me about her boyfriend, I had a hint.

“But from the beginning, my attitude was quite pragmatic: it was about spilled milk, what could we do to fix the situation?
“We had a family. We couldn’t throw that away lightly. There were other considerations.
But Covid provided the perfect storm. My mental health suffered and the differences in our ages were magnified.
“With Katie seeing Scott after the lockdown, it’s gotten to the point where I realize it’s better for us to go our separate ways and remain friendly, without the stressor of living together.”

Mark, one of six brainbox “Chasers” on ITV’s The Chase, hosted by Bradley Walsh, will move out of the couple’s Herefordshire home next month.
He plans to spend time living in hotels while he finds a new flat closer to London.
He and Katie cite their workload and travel around the world as triggers for their separation.
However, Mark admits that his wife’s ongoing relationship with Scott has taken its toll despite the couple’s initial attempts at an open marriage.

Mark added: “There was never any cheating on Katie’s part, but obviously our son has mentioned Scott’s name several times.
“Every time she does, Katie seems a little embarrassed.
“My only concern is that Scott is good to him, which he seems to be. We started talking and we started talking more and more.
“We’ve talked about some of the more important things, and Katie knows what my red lines are and I know hers. In this way, no one is surprised or surprised. “

He added: “Jealousy is so negative. Most other emotions have some benefit, but jealousy stops you working.
“I don’t want to go on stage when someone mentions Scott’s name and my shoulders stiffen.
“All that matters is the best for our son.
“I will never ever leave Katie in public. One day when our son is older, he will be reading this and I never want him to read anything bad about his mother. “
‘I FEELED SO ALONE’
The Sun on Sunday recounted last March how Katie had been cheating on Mark after meeting Scott one night in Hereford.
Since then, the couple have been on vacation, with Scott posting photos of them on his social media.
They were surprised after mutual friends saw Mark and Katie on Loose Women and asked Scott about his new girlfriend.
Explaining her actions, Katie said, “I raise my hands completely. It was one of those things.

“Basically, I had absolutely no friends around here except my parents. I didn’t know anyone.
“I was so unhappy. Mark and I hadn’t been great and he was working all the time while I looked after our son. I felt so alone.
“My friend came in one night and asked me out, introducing me to all these new people who became my social group.
“Because of our age, they are not the type of people that Mark could or would want to be with.

“I didn’t go out for the purpose of meeting someone. In the end, I met someone who I clicked with. It was from there. “
After opening up to her husband, they have spent the past 18 months trying to make their unconventional marriage work, with Mark turning a blind eye to Katie’s affair.
The star met Katie, her second cousin, through Facebook in 2010.
She said: “I had never heard of Mark, nor had I seen The Chase, but my grandmother mentioned it, so I was intrigued.”

They got together in 2012, and went out for a drink on their first date after Mark, who has an IQ of 151 (“genius is 150,” she adds modestly), invited her to see a Chase celebrity special.
They got engaged in October of the following year.
Mark said, “I got down on my knees,” to which Katie replies, “Just because I told you!”
They were married 12 months later at Arundel Cathedral in West Sussex, but their relationship showed signs of strain after the birth of their son.

After finding out about the matter, former professor Mark accepted things because he wanted “my son’s mother to be happy.”
He added: “Knowing that I had new friends meant that I could be out working without worrying.”
Mark believes that he was able to accept his unusual domestic situation because he is “on the spectrum” when it comes to autism, although he has never been diagnosed.
He smiles: “I’m not the worst people reader in the world, but I’m probably pretty close to that.

“I’m like most semi-autistic people when it comes to feelings. I did this emotional test and got 6 percent.
“Before Katie, I was basically single for 20 years and my longest previous relationship was eight months.
“I am perfectly happy on my own. I am, as they used to say, a confirmed single.”
Katie added: “Mark has never been the romantic or emotional type, which is something I really need.”

Seeing the couple’s easy camaraderie during our interview, in which their Golden Retriever Baloo happily wanders around and rescues the rabbit Almond pees on my shirt, it’s clear they are on good terms.
They are determined to remain a strong family unit.
Katie said, “Scott and I are together now and Mark knows everything.
“They spoke on the phone and I plan to introduce them properly soon.

“They met briefly about two years ago.”
Mark intervenes: “I couldn’t tell it apart from a lineup.” Katie continued: “Now I just want to have a normal relationship, no lies.
“I want everyone to know what is what and that we are all happy. I just want Mark to be happy. “
While he may still be nicknamed The Beast, Mark has lost around five stones since the confinement began and is noticeably slimmer.

At 6 feet 6 inches tall, he now weighs around 20 after putting down the cookies and starting paddling indoors.
