Angry Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pointed the accusing finger at Premier League officials as his players earned him a 3-1 win at Everton that should keep him in his post for now.
Goals from Bruno Fernandes and a late finisher from Edison Canavi sealed a much-needed victory for United on a day when Solskjaer’s job might well have been at stake.
However, the Norwegian was furious about the schedule his players had to deal with after this huge victory at Goodison Park.
Rather than toasting his team’s victory, Solskjaer was eager to score some political points as he suggested his players weren’t being treated fairly after being kicked off at lunchtime the Saturday after. from a Champions League game against Istanbul Basaksehir last Wednesday.
“The authorities prepared us to fail, who is responsible? We have had enough,” said a clearly agitated Solskjaer.
“We’ve been to Turkey, we’ve played a lot of games this season, we came back on Thursday morning and we played on Saturday at lunchtime, it’s an absolute disaster.
“Players this season, in these times, a pandemic, mentally and physically, is exhausting. Let’s play on a Sunday. Then there is an international recess after this, it’s a joke.
“These guys deserve better. Luke Shaw got hurt because of that. He’s a hamstring that could be long and Marcus Rashford could be struggling.”
When he turned his attention to the game, he admitted it was a match his team had to win as they crawled up the table after a poor start to the season.
“We knew we had to get three points today,” he added. “It is early in the season and we do not look at the table, but the points we have accumulated are not good enough for this club.”
“We started the game very well, but we conceded a disappointing goal with a long direct ball and we should have had better coverage.
“They have questioned us, but we know we don’t answer them in 90 minutes, we answer them day after day.
“The guys are working tirelessly for this club, they all want to improve and do better. The coach has to get the guys out of training ground.”
United’s response after Everton took an early lead confirmed that the players are still behind Solskjaer, with the Bruno Fernandes talisman appearing to reference Roy Keane’s claim that this team lacks leaders in his post-match comments. .
“I think we know in the dressing room what we have to do. Everybody needs to be a leader,” Fernandes told BT Sport.
“It was a great endgame. We knew what we had to do and we did it well. We know our quality. This was the time to do something in this game and we did it.
“We made some mistakes in the second half, maybe we had a little more confidence and we wanted to move on and we didn’t hold the ball too much. After the first goal we had a great reaction and we did what we had to do.” . “
