Cork is one of four counties at risk of being moved to Level 3 restrictions in the coming days, with localized clusters and increasing rates of new infections across the county.
While there is no magic number that determines if Cork receives Level 3 results, the number of active cases in the county is being closely monitored. Cork currently has 388 active cases, the highest in the country after Dublin and Donegal.
According to figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Center, Dublin has 2,102 active cases, while Donegal has 325.
And Cork had 40 new confirmed cases last night, nearly double the number of new cases recorded in Donegal, which has already been placed under Level 3 restrictions.
Here is an interactive 3D map showing the number of active cases in each county. Click the plus and minus sign to zoom in and click the county to see how many infections you have:
But another of the key measures used by the Health Department has made Cork much better: the incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 residents during the last 14 days. The county has a 71.5, well below the 204.2 seen in Donegal and the 156 in Dublin.
And different parts of Cork, divided into local election areas (LEAs), are experiencing varying incidence rates. Fermoy LEA has a rate of 49.4 cases per 100,000 residents, while Skibbereen-West Cork LEA has a rate of less than give per 100,000 residents.
In general, counties like Kildare, Louth and Roscommon have higher incidence rates of the virus, according to HPSC figures.
Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn said today that officials were closely watching Cork, Galway, Monaghan and Roscommon for new restrictions.
Glynn also dismissed speculation that any changes to Level 3 would apply only to the city of Cork and not to the county as a whole, even as the city as a whole experiences much higher incidence rates than elsewhere.
The LEA in northeast Cork City has a rate of 56.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, while the LEA in southwest Cork City has a rate of 59.5.
That’s much higher than that seen in Macroom LEA (24.4), Midleton LEA (19.8) and Bandon-Kinsale LEA (24.1).
