Tesco Ireland has announced that it will create 450 permanent jobs across the country, 120 of them based in Cork.

The supermarket chain is also generating 700 temporary positions for the Christmas business period and is already recruiting for these positions.

In announcing the jobs, Tesco CEO Kari Daniels paid tribute to the company’s existing staff.

“Since the beginning of this pandemic, our colleagues have been challenged to continue serving our customers and communities. We are pleased to be able to add these roles at this challenging time,” he said.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, Tesco, like other retailers, recruited additional staff to cope with the increased demand. 1,000 additional jobs have already been created.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin joined Tesco in announcing the roles and paid tribute to the retail staff he described as “vital” in recent months.

Mr. Martin said: “I would like to thank the Tesco staff and all the other retail workers who have kept our stores open during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He added: “They are playing a vital role in ensuring that people have access to essential supplies in a safe environment.”

“These additional jobs will further enhance the shopping experience for customers, as well as providing a boost to employment in Cork and across the country.”

120 of the new permanent jobs will be in Cork, including the Douglas Mall store, which will reopen in two weeks after a year-long shutdown following a fire.

New jobs to be filled include positions in assembly and fulfillment of customer orders for online delivery, drivers to deliver them, customer assistants, in addition to a variety of other roles in stores across the country.

The supermarket currently employs more than 13,000 people in 151 stores here, making it one of the largest private sector employers in the state.
