Tesco Ireland has warned customers that Clubcard points or discount coupons cannot be used or awarded on the purchase of alcohol due to legal changes that take effect on Monday.
The popular multi-buy offers will also be archived in all major Irish supermarkets.
The changes are part of the implementation of the government’s efforts to reduce alcohol consumption under the Public Health (Alcohol) Act 2018.
The Act has been phased in over the past year, including features like the recent introduction of barriers to keep alcohol out of general grocery areas.
However, it will affect consumers in a more significant way next week.
As of January 11, three new measures will be incorporated.
Sellers of alcohol will be prohibited from selling alcohol at a lower price based on the purchase of another product or service.
This means that offers such as “buy six bottles for € 40” or “buy six and get a 25% discount” will not be allowed.
Offering loyalty points in the sale of alcohol is prohibited.
Short-term promotions of three days or less can no longer be run.

A Tesco Ireland spokesperson said: “Due to legal changes, as of January 11, Clubcard points and discount coupons cannot be used or awarded for alcohol purchases.
Its terms and conditions state: “Certain goods or services are excluded from all electronic coupon offers.
“These include purchases of alcohol, tobacco products, formula, prescription drugs, and shipping costs.
“From time to time, other goods or services may be excluded and any additional exclusions will be notified to you together with the eCoupon or via the tesco.com website.
“Electronic coupons may be limited to redemption in respect of certain products or services or certain products or services may be excluded from the scope of use of the electronic coupon, in which case you will be notified at the time the electronic coupon is issued.
“The excluded goods and services will not count towards the qualification conditions of the offers and will not benefit from any promotional discount.”
Dunnes Stores
Customers of Dunnes Stores’ popular Shop & Save promotion will have to find another way to get their total up to the € 50 / € 100 required to claim their discount than the often-used way of putting another bottle of wine or six-pack in the wheelbarrow.
The Supermarket has recently added a disclaimer to receipts saying the offer will exclude alcohol items starting January 11.

SuperValu is also telling customers that alcoholic products will no longer qualify for any incentives associated with its coupon scheme.
The intensified national lockdown comes as infection rates skyrocket to rates never seen before, and public health chiefs warn that the death toll from Covid-19 is likely to rise significantly in the coming weeks.
Pubs and restaurants have been closed since Christmas Eve after the country got a brief respite during the month of December.
