A teenager has died after falling off a cliff off the Kerry coast this afternoon.

The body of the 17-year-old boy, believed to have slipped while walking, was recovered by RNLI volunteers after a major operation involving the Coast Guard, RNLI and other emergency services.

The boy is known to have been walking along the coast of Cinn Ard on the Dingle Peninsula with family members around 1:00 pm when he slipped and fell.

Emergency services were immediately alerted and the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter was tasked with going to the scene. Volunteers from the Dingle and Valentia Coast Guard units also participated in the search, as well as volunteers from lifeboats.

Helicopter personnel located the teenager in an inaccessible area at the foot of the cliffs, and his body was recovered by members of Valentia’s RNLI at around 3 p.m.

The body was taken by boat to Dingle, for transfer to Kerry University Hospital in Tralee, where a post-mortem examination will take place, possibly tomorrow.

Gardaí in Dingle is investigating the death, but is treating it as a tragic accident.
