Leo Varadkar wants to cut coronavirus unemployment benefits before wage subsidies because he says people are milking the system and don’t want to go back to work.

Varadkar was speaking to Demot and Dave Show on Today FM on Wednesday morning.

He said, “In fact, there are people who do more on Covid payments than they were working part-time, and some employers actually tell us that it’s hard to get people back to work because of it.”

Having said that, I don’t think it is possible to discontinue it in mid-June, we will have to go further because people should have the opportunity to return to work and there are many companies that will not be able to reopen in mid-June, so we intend to extend it.

“I can’t say exactly how long it will run for.

“One thing we will probably extend is the Temporary Salary Subsidy Plan (TWSS) for longer than the (Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP)) because we will encourage employers to take people back from the pandemic payment to the wage subsidy scheme, so that you know it, when you get your job back, if you reject it you really lose your pandemic unemployment payment, but your employer will be able to take it back in the wage subsidy scheme, for which we will pay most of the wages for the employer

“That is about getting people back to work.”
