The Irish Food Safety Authority has closed three take-out sushi establishments that were operated from the bedroom of a home in Dublin, where heavy rodent activity was found.

The three take-out meals were unregistered and operated online from a home on Shanvarna Road in Santry.

The takeout foods in question were Koi Sushi, Nagoya Sushi, and Kyoto Sushi.

The FSAI said that not only were there violations of food safety controls, but there was evidence of extensive rodent activity “in all food preparation and storage areas; rodent droppings and gnawed food pose a serious risk of contamination for food and consumers. “

A live rodent was also seen during the inspection.

The FSAI said that the food was “produced, processed and distributed in an unsatisfactory and impure environment” and that there was also an “absence of safe practices when handling raw fish and cooked rice.”

Two other food establishments in Co Cork, TFS Wholesale, Unit 6 & 7 Colomane, Bantry and Speedos (Restaurant / Café), 8 Tuckey Street, Cork City, were also closed by the FSAI in October.

FSAI Executive Director Dr. Pamela Byrne expressed concern that this month’s “Execution Orders included three closure orders in relation to persons running unregistered and supervised food businesses in line that sell a variety of sushi products from the bedroom of a home. “

He said that these businesses pose a serious risk to consumer health.

Dr. Byrne added: “Sushi is a very high risk product because it contains raw fish that must be kept cold to reduce the growth of dangerous bacteria.

“It can also contain cooked rice, which is a ready-to-eat product that must be kept cold.

“In these cases, the absence of a food safety management system, the lack of monitoring of the cold chain and the absence of traceability tests for raw materials posed a serious and immediate danger to consumer health.”
