Some 14,000 places in higher education will be available at no or reduced fees to help support workers affected by Covid-19.

The Minister of Higher Education, Simon Harris, will announce today a funding of 30 million euros to support part-time or postgraduate places.

Last July, the government announced an employment stimulus package, and part of the focus was on training the workers most affected by restrictions aimed at containing the virus.

As part of that, the financing package to be announced today will seek to ease the financial burden on those seeking training or education.

It will finance the fees for almost 12,000 places in modular courses.

These are short and focused and can be done remotely or part-time, to allow people to acquire skills without having to leave the job market.

2,500 postgraduate places will also be financed.

These will be available in 200 courses at 23 universities and institutions of higher education, covering a range of skills including science, engineering, ICT, health and tourism and hospitality.

Funding will be open to those returning to the workforce, whether employed or recent graduates.

Those who receive welfare payments, including the Pandemic Unemployment Payment, will be eligible to take courses at no charge.
