By Sam Hendry
Nicky Henderson’s superstar hunter Altior was dramatically ruled out Friday night from his planned return at Betfair Tingle Creek Chase in Sandown on Saturday as a result of ground conditions.
Henderson insisted he’s “dying” to run the horse, but said he didn’t want to risk a repeat last year when Altior lost his unbeaten record to Cyrname on his return to Ascot on soft ground.
The chase course at Sandown is officially mild, good to mild in places, and that was enough for Henderson to make the difficult decision to withdraw the ten-year-old from the Grade 1 contest. Champion Chase in March is still the one. main goal for the double winner of the race.

Henderson told the Racing Post: “It’s been a very, very long night of arguing with myself, Nico [de Boinville] and owners Patricia and Chris Pugh, and in the interest of the horse we have decided to withdraw it. There is only one race that matters and it is at Cheltenham in March and you don’t need to start the season on terrain like that.
“If it had been Wednesday he would have loved the terrain, it was beautiful, but the rain at the last minute has ruined everything. We are looking forward to running it, I would love to, but I do not think It’s okay. sad and it was a very difficult decision to make, but we all agreed. “
Shock Altior’s withdrawal leaves Tingle Creek at the mercy of Paul Nicholls’ partner
Henderson added: “When you train racehorses you have to take care of them and this is the best thing for the horse. If he ran, he would have a very tough race, regardless of whether he won or lost because he puts 100 percent on everything.
“It makes me cry to think he’s putting a Grade 1 on the shelf, but the horse comes first and March is the target. We can’t ask him to get involved in that field.”
Henderson named Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton, Clarence House at Ascot or Game Spirit at Newbury as potential targets for Altior, who said he was eager to go to his first competitive racetrack appearance since February.
The ten-time Grade 1 winner also lost an opportunity to defend his Champion Chase crown in March when he was found to have a splint problem in the run-up to the race.
The shocking decision leaves Politologue, last season’s Champion Hunt winner, as the 5-4 favorite with Betfair sponsors for Tingle Creek, with his Paul Nicholls-trained stablemate Greaneteen second in the market. with 9-4.
