Met Eireann issued a five-day weather advisory for frost, ice, sleet and snow when Storm Christoph hits Ireland.

The alert is in effect for the entire country from midnight on Wednesday until 11:56 p.m. M. From Sunday.

It says: “Getting colder from Wednesday with increasingly wintry weather conditions for the rest of the week. Risk of frost and icy conditions, with sleet or snow falling at times.”

In the meantime, a few very cold days await, although it will stay dry and even sunny in some places on Thursday, before turning icy overnight with lows of -3C.

A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Rain in many areas early this morning and will continue today in Leinster and Munster. It will be heavy at times, turning to sleet or snow in parts of eastern and southern Leinster this afternoon, especially on high ground. Sunny. “Thursday night will be dry in many areas with clear periods. Rains will affect parts of the west and north. These will become increasingly wintry overnight, frosts will develop in many areas as the winds decrease. The lowest temperatures of -3 to + 2 degrees “.

And as we get closer to the weekend, it will get even colder with lows of -4 ° C at times.

Weather experts also warned of the possibility of more snowfall early next week, as conditions will remain “very cold.”

One forecaster added: “Friday will be cold with bright or sunny spells and scattered winter rains, heavier and more frequent in the west and north and more scattered to the east. Higher temperatures 3-6 degrees with light breezes.

“Friday night will be very cold with frost and ice patches developing. Some patches of fog as well. Most areas will be dry. However, winter rains will continue in the northwest overnight. Temperatures lower than -4 to 0 degrees.

“Saturday and Sunday will continue to be very cold with sunny spells and scattered winter rains. The highest temperatures range between 2 and 6 degrees. Widespread frosts both nights with temperatures falling to -4 degrees in some places.

“Current indications for next week suggest that Monday will continue to be very cold with more winter rains and frost at night.

“On Tuesday, the rain will spread from the west, possibly falling as sleet or snow for a time when it meets the colder air.”
