Met Éireann warned of a new storm that is forecast to bring wet and windy weather across France, Britain and Ireland for the rest of the week.

Storm Alex, which was named by the French meteorological bureau, is expected to hit the continent on Thursday with associated strong winds reaching Ireland on Friday.

However, there are no weather warnings for Ireland as a result of the storm.

Overall, the next few days are expected to be colder and more volatile, but a respite from the bad weather is expected after the weekend.

On Thursday night, the rains will be confined mainly to the east and north of the island, with prolonged and clear periods developing elsewhere. Temperatures will be low, between two and six degrees with the possibility of frost on the lawn.

On Friday many places will have a dry and bright day with periods of sunshine. However, the rains are likely to affect parts of Leinster, northwestern Connacht, and western Ulster in the morning. But Met Éireann said it should dry out in most areas during the afternoon and evening.

Saturday is expected to be dry and bright in many areas at first with sunny spells, but wet and windy weather is likely to spread out from the northeast during the day, although there is still some uncertainty at the exact time.

Sunday will bring heavy rains that will likely be increasingly confined to Munster and south of Leinster, with drier conditions developing further north.

The best weather may be early next week, offering a brief window of a drier and more settled period on Monday, but becoming more unstable again starting Tuesday.
