The late Boyzone star Stephen Gately will have a park named after him near his childhood home on Sheriff Street.
The Royal Canal Linear Park next to Spencer Dock will be named after the singer, who tragically died in October 2009 at the age of 33.
A motion to name the park in memory of Gately was passed unanimously after councilors Anthony Flynn and Christy Burke presented it to the Dublin City Council Central Area Committee.
Councilmember Flynn took to social media to share his joy that the park was named after the downtown hero.
He said: “We live in a community and a city of absolute legends. We must celebrate, promote and encourage each and every one of them!”
The North Inner City representative also shared a video message from Stephen’s delighted bandmate Keith Duffy, who thanked the councilors for introducing the motion.
He added: “Thanks to the Dublin City Council for seeing it timely to move forward with this idea. Congratulations guys.
“Congratulations to Margaret Gately, Stephen’s mom. Congratulations to Stephen’s family and congratulations to everyone on Sheriff Street.
“The council has seen fit to honor an amazing and wonderfully talented man from Sheriff Street who lost his life too young, but will now be remembered forever in his hometown of Dublin with the honor of having a park named after him.
“From one of your closet friends, your brothers, I’m honestly a little excited, I’m not going to lie.
“I am delighted. It is incredible to think that his name will live forever in the city of Dublin. What a wonderful day.”
Boyzone member Ronan Keating also took to Twitter to share his joy at the news.
He wrote: “Thank you, thank you. This is incredible news.”
