There is a STATE YELLOW rain advisory in five counties through Wednesday night.
Met Éireann issued the warning for Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Mayo and Galway on Tuesday morning.
The warning has been in effect as of 6pm and remains valid until 6pm tomorrow.
An additional warning has also been issued for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, and Tipperary, valid from 5 am to 5 pm on Wednesday.
Met Éireann said 30-50mm of rain is expected in the affected counties, with higher amounts in mountainous areas.
The forecaster also warned of flooding in parts, with reduced visibility and dangerous driving conditions.
Elsewhere, the rain will gradually spread across the country overnight with some very heavy drops, especially in the western and southern counties.
There will also be wind in some parts, although temperatures will be relatively mild with lows of 9 to 11 degrees Celsius.

The wet weather will continue tomorrow, with more heavy rains to begin, although this will decrease in the west and southwest in the afternoon and the eastern counties in the afternoon.
Strong and gusty south are also expected throughout the day, with temperatures higher than 11-13 degrees Celsius.
