South-central Cork has a 14-day incidence of Covid-19 three times higher than the national average

There has been a significant increase in the number of Covid-19 cases being reported in almost every Local Election Area (LEA) in Cork.

New figures have shown that the 14-day incidence of new cases has more than doubled in some areas.

The figures, available on the Covid-19 Data Hub, show LEA-level information across Ireland between September 29 and October 12.

According to the figures, Cork City South Central LEA has the highest incidence of Covid-19 in 14 days per 100,000 people with 566.4.

The figures are significantly higher than the 14-day national Covid-19 incidence of 177.2 and more than double the 14-day incidence of 240.5 reported to the LEA last week.

In terms of case numbers, 219 Covid-19 cases were reported in the area in the 14 days to October 12.

In last week’s report, which included data from 14 days to October 5, a total of 93 cases were reported in the same area.

Cork City South West LEA, Cork City North West LEA, Cork City North East LEA, and Cork City South East LEA also reported a 14-day incidence rate that was greater than 177.2 per 100,000 people.

Cork City North East LEA reported an incidence rate of 298.8 and 126 cases. Cork City North West LEA reported a 14-day incidence rate of 256.3 and a total of 103 cases.

Cork City South West LEA reported the next highest 14-day incidence rate of 252.9 and 119 cases, while Cork City South East LEA reported an incidence rate of 231.4 and fewer than 100 cases with a total of 99 confirmed cases.

Carrigaline LEA, Bandon – Kinsale LEA, Skibbereen-west Cork LEA, Fermoy LEA, Midleton LEA, and Macroom LEA all reported Covid-19 incidence per 100,000 out of more than 100, although still lower than the national rate.

Of those six LEAs, the Carrigaline LEA had the highest 14-day incidence rate of 173.6.

A total of 61 cases were reported in the area.

The next highest 14-day incidence rate of 143.8 was reported in Fermoy LEA with a total of 56 cases also reported.

Cobh LEA reported a 14-day incidence rate of 140.7 with 48 confirmed cases, followed by Bandon – Kinsale LEA which had an incidence rate of 139.5 with 52 cases reported in the area.

Midleton LEA reported a 14-day incidence rate of 123.2 with 56 cases reported in the area and Skibbereen-west Cork LEA reported a 14-day incidence rate of 109 with 33 cases reported in the area.

Macroom LEA reported the smallest 14-day incidence rate of the six LEAs with an incidence rate of 103.1 and a total of 38 cases.

Among the parts of Cork with the lowest incidence of Covid-19 cases are Kanturk LEA with a 14-day incidence rate of 80.2 and Mallow LEA with an incidence rate of 68.6. A total of 20 cases were reported in both LEAs.

Bantry-West Cork reported a 14-day incidence rate of 93.6 with a total of 21 cases reported in the area.
