Sottsass captured Qatar’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe against a nearly deserted Longchamp when Enable failed in his bid for a historic third victory, finishing sixth under Frankie Dettori.

In what was a messy run of Europe’s most prestigious race under conditions even more peculiar by Covid-19 restrictions, Persian King set only a modest pace at the lead as he tried to stretch his endurance as runners collided and rolled between. yes. on the ground on the home straight, with Enable interfered among others.

The stewards called for an investigation into the result after the runners passed the post, but the finishing positions remained unchanged.

However, Sottsass, who finished third behind Waldgeist and Enable at last year’s Arc, was excellent as he took and rose to the lead in the last furlong and a half to claim the award for the fast-finishing In Swoop.

Coach Jean-Claude Rouget was winning the Arc for the first time and said: “We have worked all year for this. Our whole goal for 2020 was this and it has not been easy with the changes in the schedule.

“We have never been able to do exactly what we wanted with the horse. But these last few days I really felt like I was in top form.”

Enable, so brilliant in his previous three Arc races, was blunted by ground conditions as well as interference and was never in a position to make a hard-hitting challenge.

‘The cost is incredible,’ says O’Brien in dismay after missing Arc

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Enable owner Khalid Abdullah, said: “She just couldn’t go down, really and truly. She’s been in a good position, Frankie has been happy with her, but she just couldn’t carry on like us Normally I would hope that she would.

“We’ll see how he is when I get back and talk to John [Gosden] and Prince Khalid and make a plan. There will be no decisions [on retirement] In this point.”

With Aidan O’Brien forced to withdraw his runners from Arc over concerns about contaminated food, pacing tasks were up for grabs and it was Pierre-Charles Boudot who took the bull by the horns from Prix du Moulin winner Persian King, who was going up considerably in travel.

Enable sat in fifth with Sottsass positioned in front of her and inland, where jockey Cristian Demuro could make use of the strip of fresh dirt open for Sunday.

When the false rail disappeared, Sottsass made his move to chase after the Persian King with Enable and Stradivarius prominent on the outside. When the favorite drifted to his right, Sottsass moved to the left causing interference along with Gold Trip, who was approaching to the right from outside the field.

Despite the union, the shocked were simply outmatched by Sottsass when he emerged clear in Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm colors.

Rouget wasn’t sure what the future holds for Sottsass, with a 50 percent stake in the Siyouni colt sold to Coolmore partners in January.

“I don’t know what’s next,” he said. “The owners will argue with each other. I would like to see him be a good stallion, as he is such a handsome horse.”
