Solskjaer defends Paul Pogba after another comeback with Manchester United

Manchester United came back once again to record a 3-2 win at Sheffield United, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not entirely satisfied with his team’s performance.

Olskjaer’s decision to start goalkeeper Dean Henderson against his former club backfired when he made a mistake handing David McGoldrick the first goal of the game, before two goals from Marcus Rashford and a shot from Anthony Martial put United in a dominant position.

A late goal from McGoldrick ensured United’s nerves were shaken in the final minutes, with Solskjaer admitting that his team should have killed the match earlier against the Premier League last team.

“It was not at all comfortable towards the end,” said the United manager. “We made it difficult again after a slow start, but then we played something brilliant. When they get that second goal it’s not comfortable at all.

“We played brilliant football between his first goal and his second goal – the end was a bit awkward for my taste.

“We have good players and today we find the spaces behind them very well. Why are we winning away from home? Maybe teams … I don’t know, I don’t know.”

Solskjaer also defended goalkeeper Henderson, after he put in an unconvincing performance by replacing veteran No. 1 David De Gea.

“We saw the good and the bad of him today because he made a great save towards the end,” he said. “He’s always learning. He’s probably been looking forward to coming back here and after that start he shows his character for the rest of the game.”

Solskjaer also offered a resounding defense of Pogba, after his agent confirmed he wanted to leave United last month.

“He’s a Manchester United guy, he’s been to this club as a kid and this is his home,” he added. “He likes to play for us and today he was exceptional.”

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder admitted that his team’s long wait for a first win of the season is building pressure on him and his team as they sit at the bottom of the table.

“I am happy with the form of the performance,” Wilder said. “I think anyone who has seen us would say that we have been competitive, but that is not enough.

“Tonight was about a performance, if I’m honest. We needed one of the players and we asked some world-class players some questions.

“Manchester United is an iconic world football club, one of the top three in the world. There is a huge gulf between us and we have to try to bridge it with a performance that I think we did.

“We are a bit disappointed in the way of a couple of goals, but my players tried. I wanted my team to be aggressive and have an intention in our game and I think we did it. We had to be brave when we committed” to the press and we were. “
