Much of the country will snow Tuesday with chilly easterly winds bringing winter rains off the Irish Sea.
Snow already fell in Co Meath on Monday and some parts of Ulster and Leinster are likely to see more snowfall later in the day.
Snow will fall overnight in Ulster and north Leinster and winter rains, which fall as sleet or snow, will spread inland on Tuesday.
The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) shows snow falling on Monday night along the east coast from Antrim to Wicklow and in the Midlands to Co Offaly.
There will be two separate bands of snow on Tuesday, one in the center of the country stretching into Galway and a second along the south coast in Munster.
The snow that will fall on Tuesday can stay on the ground in some places because temperatures will only be between 1 and 3 degrees during the week.
“You could see Dublin go up to 3 cm on Tuesday. You could be seeing snow on the ground, ”said Met forecaster Éireann Linda Hughes.
Wednesday will see a similar pattern, but on Wednesday night an Atlantic weather front will hit the cold air from the east.
“We are looking for suitable accruals on Thursday. We are seeing 5 cm on Thursday widely. We should see snow fall on Thursday, ”he said.
“Right now, the south and southeast are seeing the highest accumulations. I hope that changes a lot in the next few days. ”
Hughes said there was uncertainty about what will happen after that, as warmer air is likely to follow, although parts of Leinster and Ulster could see snow linger.
In his weather commentary on the Met Éireann website, forecaster Matthew Martin said that the difference between the sea temperature, which is 8 degrees, and the upper air temperature, which is minus 10 degrees, is 18 degrees. The differential for the humidity of the sea to fall in the form of snow is 13 degrees.
He said it should be “enough to create some snow showers in the next few days.”
He added: “Current projections indicate a sleet and snow streak that will spread northeast over Ireland on Thursday and Friday, bringing snow accumulations to many areas. However, snow can turn to rain in parts of the south and west as softer air tries to come in from the Atlantic. ”
In Britain, Storm Darcy has brought snow to much of England and Wales. It has been nicknamed “Beast from the East II”. It is also hampering the launch of the vaccine in parts of England.
