Skeletal remains found in East Cork during work on the new greenway

SKELETON REMAINS have been found on the route of an old railway line on the outskirts of Midleton in East Cork. The bones were discovered during work on a new Greenway.

The workers stopped their activities shortly after 5:30 p.m. today, when human bones were found on the Midleton to Youghal Greenway near Dungourney Road.

Gardaí were notified and have cordoned off the area. Gardaí has ​​requested the services of the State Pathologist’s office.

The finding is being treated as suspicious pending further analysis. Gardaí is considering the possibility that the remains are historical.

The off-road route links the towns of Midleton, Mogeely, Killeagh and Youghal. It is understood that a full site survey will be conducted before work is resumed on the Via Verde.

When completed, the Via Verde will provide a suitable slope for users of all ages and abilities as a safe, accessible and attractive route for biking and walking.

Site cleanup includes removal of vegetation and remaining rails and ties as the first phase of the construction stage.

The Midleton Youghal Greenway follows the route of the disused railway line from Midleton Railway Station to the old Youghal Railway Station. The development is expected to cost 19.8 million euros.
